What you should do with a website - A rough guide:
If you have decided to build your own website, or are editing a website that you already have, the following tips should ensure you website is as powerful and easy to use as possible:
DO keep keep things fast:
Remember, not everybody has a high-speed Internet connection. Try to keep your pages under 75KB in size. For a 56k modem, it should take no longer than 20 seconds for your page to load. If you are in doubt, take a look at Google, the biggest Search Engine on the planet.
Do tell your visitors what you do:
Make sure you tell your visitors what your business does as soon as possible, not after 5 clicks. Otherwise you can't assume they will search around to find out.
DO check spellings and punctuation:
For some people there is nothing more annoying than bad spellings. Check and recheck your spellings. Lots of spelling mistakes can make your website look as though it was made by an amateur.
DO update your site often:
Why would visitors want to return to a website, when there is nothing new on it. Try to make updates frequently. They don't have to be big, half an hour per week is enough for some smaller websites.
DO check links:
Check your links on your website work (frequently if you link to other websites). You can even find tools on the Internet that will do this for you. For some users, "Error: File not found." pages can be very annoying.
DO try to be original:
Content really is king! If it is the same as many other sites, why would people want to visit it? Unique, interesting and informative content will keep your visitors hooked.
DO give your contact details:
It may sound obvious, but some people actually forget to put their contact details on their website. How else can you expect new customers to contact you with orders, suggestions, and compliments?
DO promote your site:
Promote your site well and you will keep receiving new vistors. Stop promoting it and they will go away. A well promoted website will generate, visitors, feedback and orders. You may find our Search Engine Optimization area helpful for this issue.
DO make it easy to navigate:
The number of clicks required to reach any page on your website from the home page should never be more than 4. If it is more than that, may want to re-consider the navigation on your website.
DO check images:
Make sure all the pictures on your website work. It gives visitors a very bad impression of you and your company when they find images that don't work. This can often cause them to leave.
