Safety Concerns - Is the Internet safe?
Is it really safe to enter my Credit Card details to a website?
The answer is Yes and No. It really depends on the website. Follow these basic steps to determine if a website is safe enough for you to enter your Credit Card details:
Is the page asking you for your Credit Card number using SSL encryption? If not, your Credit Card details will be sent across the Internet in plain text. This can allow almost anyone to read your Credit Card information.
You can usually tell if a page is using SSL with the following two methods:
- The address in your browser (or URL) will start with https:// instead of http://
- A small padlock image will usually be visible in the bottom bar of your browser.
In summary:
If the page that is asking for you Credit Card number does not use SSL, then do NOT enter your Credit Card number.
There are also other considerations regarding the physical location and physical security of the website itself. However if you follow the above methods, entering Credit Card details online is actually MORE safe than giving them via fax or post or over the phone.
