Coding Standards for getting high rankings:
The specific standards below are techniques we have found to be true. Although these techniques will generally help you get a better rank with some of the major Search Engines, there are many other techniques and secrets we do not mention here.
TITLE Tags:
Ensure your TITLE tags are descriptive and accurate for the information on that page. Entering text here that has nothing to do with your site can actually get you banned from some Search Engines.
File Names:
When naming files on your site, you will find it better to use file names like "products.htm" instead of "1.htm" etc. This doesn't only help you as a developer to find the pages you want to update, it also helps some Search Engines decide what your page is actually about.
Links:
If you decide to use dynamic pages (i.e., the URL contains a "?" character to display content), remember that not every Search Engine can crawl these types of pages. The best thing to do is keep parameters short and the number of them small.
Pictures and Images:
Use plain text to names important information and links instead of pictures. At the time of writing, none of the major Search Engines can recognize text inside pictures. If you must use pictures, be sure to take advantage of the ALT attribute for them. Also the use of descriptive file names will also help Search Engines understand what they contain.
