Search Engine Optimization

Other than the top 3, are they worth it?

"Submit your site to 100,000 Search Engines" - Often the line from the many hundreds of Search Engine submission sites around the world. This may seem like the answer to achieving your e-commerce dreams? But Beware. If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

The most likely effect is that by using these services you will generate 100,000 spam e-mails selling you everything from "logo templates" to the "latest pills to hit the market".

However, perhaps a more important reason as to why you shouldn't use these services is that there is little value in a listing in the thousands of smaller Search Engines, which are unlikely to generate many visitors.

In reality these smaller Search Engines also tend to use the databases created by the major ones for their results (e.g. AOL Search uses the database from Yahoo!). So a good position in Google or Yahoo! will also mean a good position on many other Search Engines that use the same information.

Generally speaking, the best way to run any Search Engine promotion campaign is to aim for the best positions in the top 3 Search Engines (Google, Yahoo! and MSN) getting ranked high in these will produce enough traffic for you not to worry about the smaller Search Engines (even though they will start to include you because you are listed in the major Search Engines).
