I just thought I would put in a quick post and be the first here. I am starting to work on some WAP pages or cards, but I am used to working with HTML and have to get used to the small screen format and keeping the text down as a result. I have no kids at that age, so I still find it hard to figure out what people use it for and why.
Anyone got any thoughts on the matter?

Hi sfowler,
Nice to see you joined :)
I did do some work on WAP a few years back now, and must admit it was a bit of a pain for me aswell. Thankfully the ever-growing mobile market does seem to be moving away from WAP (or at least here in the UK).
Most of the newer mobile phones these days, either use the Symbian OS or Microsoft`s own CS version for mobiles (Windows Smartphone). Both of which do have full HTML browsers built in. Infact the latter of the two uses Internet Explorer as you would expect.
It does seem to me that WAP is actually being phased out in favour of full HTML browsing by many of the popular mobile and palm pc manufacturers. Remember those who actually use the Internet while mobile are more likely to be technical in nature, it is also well-known people who are into technology do tend to have the latest gadgets.
My advice would be to offer a slimmed-down mobile version of your website on a sub domain or something similar. Ask some of the users at www.modaco.com to test it out if you don`t have the required mobile device yourself. If it proves popular, you`re on to a winner without having to learn what appears to be a dying language.

Somebody has to get the ball rolling. I am not so sure. WAP is only just now working its way into people`s lives now. There is Google search and other features that are only starting here.
I am not sure if it is the technically minded people. It is usually the teenagers who know about all of this!
With HTML there was always an emphasis on text and plenty of it, but that is not really feasible with WAP.
The next thing I worry about is the issue of duplicate content. If I just use the same content, then I can see problems ahead.
Hey, and clean up the code on the right side. It does look very sloppy. does this forum support BB code, or HTML or something different?

I`m not even so sure kids use it too much to be honest, though I may be wrong, it may well be worth your while to look up WAP usage statistics before moving forward. Google may offer the service, but it also offers lots of other services which I doubt are used amazingly often.
I quite agree on the Forum code tho, thanks. No BB code as yet, however stay with me, it`ll get there eventually.
As you know, there are plenty of other projects going on for us at the moment :)
